The Floating World & Equinox Series

The Floating World paintings were made after a visit to Japan during the winter of 2009, where I spent time in Kyoto and Nara. The series included the first of my ‘Cabinet Paintings’. This series of small paintings, all oil on panel, were framed under museum glass in deep black box frames with black mounts, hand stained in Indian ink. For me this presentation echoed the minimalist simplicity of Japanese carpentry and lacquer work.

The Equinox Series

The paintings which form the Equinox Series were all made between 2012 and 2014. Predominantly concerned with light and space, each painting was an entirely imagined scene centred around a horizon line. The first pieces were exhibited in 2012 and the series included the After Equinox Edition, a limited edition archival print published in 2014.
